Hope they do it right. Shocked that many people don’t know this story.

It is surprising that it’s nearly 20 years since the release of Saving Private Ryan and this story is just now getting a modern motion picture treatment.

Eh. It’s a losing story from a war they won (and not just losing, getting the piss kicked out of them). It doesn’t fit the “heroic victory”, “heroic defeat”, or “this is why we lost” tropes that war movies tend to be about. Not really surprising. There aren’t many movies about Kasserine Pass either.

There are a number of amazing stories from the Second World War that do not get mentioned, hopefully this movie will be successful and we can get stories like the Battle off Samar or the story of Old 666.

Yes, the battle off Samar is an incredible story. Have you read Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors ?

It is on my list, is it good?

Yeah, highly recommend. Ship of Ghosts , also by James Hornfischer, is fantastic as well. That one is about the USS Houston.

I respectfully disagree.

I have only seen the trailer but I imagine the film focuses not so much on the “Disaster of Dunkirk” but on the evacuation effort, and the hundreds of small, non-military ships that helped.

Ever heard of the Dunkirk spirit?

I’m not saying that it’s a bad thing to make a movie about (in fact, I tend to prefer war movies about losing sides, and I’m cautiously optimistic about this). Just, not surprising that notoriously risk-averse moviemakers never greenlighted a film that doesn’t tick the “right” boxes for a war movie.

I was more concerned with your seeing the plot as “a losing story from a war they won (and not just losing, getting the piss kicked out of them).”

Dunkirk was indeed a military disaster; but the evacuation effort could also be considered an immense civilian victory that greatly helped morale in the UK at the time.

I understand your point about pictures that do not exactly show a victorious engagement, and fully agree with it. “A Bridge Too Far” comes to mind.

Excellent, thank you for the recommendation. I’ll get around to both as soon as I can!

I’m waiting for stuff from the korean war. I realized the other day that nobody ever talks about it. It is like it never happened.

They could totally do a movie on Fox Company and the Chosin Reservoir.

I was on a video and someone was talking about the north koreans lacking anti-tank weapons so they would literally swarm the shermans and they would have to hose each other down with machine guns. Then I realized I knew practically nothing about how that war was fought.

If you get a chance, read The Last Stand of Fox Company . It’s an excellent account of that particular battle and really gives you an appreciation for how brutal it was.

I just hope it is historically accurate. Should be an incredible story.
